3 MLB FanDuel Value Plays for Friday 7/28/23
Finding low-salary production is one way to get a leg up on the competition in MLB DFS.
Here are some low-salary players to target on FanDuel for Friday's main slate.
Advanced statistics courtesy of FanGraphs.
Jordan Montgomery, SP, St. Louis Cardinals ($9,400)
Tonight, southpaw starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will get the ball for the St. Louis Cardinals against their fiercest rivals: the Chicago Cubs. Off the top, Montgomery will get the hometown benefit of pitching in front of the Busch Stadium faithful.
At numberFire, Montgomery's Friday projection yields a quality value score of 3.32 (translating to 31.2 FanDuel points), which is eighth-best among today's available pitchers. He has been maintaining a mostly solid season, showing a respectable 4.17 SIERA at the moment.
Montgomery does not walk hitters at a high rate (6.4% of batters faced in 2023) nor does he allow a ton of hard contact (Statcast hard-hit rate of 31.6%).
For a salary of only $9,400, I believe he has a good shot to have a productive DFS night in front of one of the best home crowds in baseball.
Bryce Harper, 1B/OF, Philadelphia Phillies ($3,300)
In the midst of a position transition, Bryce Harper appears to be thriving again for the Philadelphia Phillies. Whether slated at first base or DH, Harper is seeing the baseball well right now. He has hit safely in 12 of his past 14 games. He also has produced four RBI over Philadelphia's last four contests.
Harper and the Phils are set for a Friday night bid at the Pittsburgh Pirates -- that means it'll be a battle for the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (which admittedly has lost intensity since the 1970s).
Either way, PNC Park on the northern bank of the Allegheny River is a venue that plays favorably to left-handed hitters like Harper; the right-field foul pole sits a short 320 feet from home plate.
Additionally, Harper will hold the platoon advantage over Pittsburgh starting pitcher Mitch Keller. In 2023, Keller has been quite good, but Harper does have four hits in only six lifetime at-bats against him.
Harper's rehab from Tommy John seems to be progressing as it should. Favorably, he has found a home at first base, taking impact off his throwing arm. I think that can lead to an uptick in his offensive production.
Salaried at $3,300 on Friday, Harper is worth the risk.
Randal Grichuk, OF, Colorado Rockies ($3,400)
Ten-year MLB veteran Randal Grichuk is having a fine campaign at the plate in his second season with the Colorado Rockies. Of course, we know having home games with the mile-high elevation of Coors Field can often lead to a surge in offensive numbers. That will be the venue Friday evening as they take on the Oakland Athletics.
Grichuk will see Oakland starter JP Sears on the mound. Against lefties like Sears, Grichuk is crushing the ball in 2023, boasting an OPS of 1.028 in the split.
Additionally, the MLB game projections at numberFire have Colorado's run total at 6.04 for Friday -- that is the largest number on the daily board.
Circling back to Sears: I genuinely think he is in line for a laborious start given the venue. In 2023, Sears is allowing fly balls in 54.6% of balls in-play against him -- those can easily end up in the stands at a high frequency in Denver.
Combining that with Grichuk's prowess versus lefties and his moderate salary, I believe he presents a low-risk/high-reward scenario.
According to numberFire, Grichuk is projected to produce 11.9 FanDuel points on Friday.
