Versus the Netherlands last time out, the US failed to win at the World Cup for the first time in 13 matches. It was also the first time they trailed in a World Cup game since 2011.

That was their toughest match on paper in the group stage, against a very solid Netherlands team. In this game, the Americans are fairly sizable favorites against Portugal.

This will be a late one, as the game kicks off on Tuesday, August 1st, at 3:00 a.m. Eastern time.

USA vs. Portugal Analysis:

After the Americans failed to win last time out, it's technically not impossible for the US to be eliminated in the group stage.

The odds above reflect that this is unlikely, and they should be able to win this match. The Americans played well against the Dutch last game -- particularly in the second half -- despite not being able to win. They created 0.9 expected goals (xG), per FBRef, to just 0.3 for the Netherlands.

Portugal got their first ever win at the World Cup in their last match against Vietnam. They played well, winning 2-0, and limited Vietnam to just one shot on target. They also had 4.8 xG in that game, which was more than the USA created versus Vietnam (not including the penalty).

Something to watch for the US is a potential lineup change. It was clear in the second half of the game against the Netherlands that Rose Lavelle has a huge impact on the team's ability to create chances. She is particularly dangerous from corner kicks and put several dangerous balls into the box after coming off the bench. It will be interesting to see if US manager Vlatko Andonovski wants to leave Lavelle as an impact sub or move her to a starting role.

Telma Encarnacao was the standout player for Portugal in their last match. She had a goal and an assist in the first 21 minutes of the game. She has a good scoring record of 54 goals in 78 games for her club, Maritimo. Even though that record isn't from the best league, she is clearly a dangerous striker.

If you want to back the US but don't want to mess with the -420 moneyline, you will have to dig a bit deeper. Sophia Smith opened the scoring for the US against Vietnam and has perhaps been the Americans' most dangerous attacker in the tournament. You can bet on her to score first in this match at +340.

Something with shorter odds that still provides some value is the US to win either 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 at +105. The US has only allowed 0.3 total xG in their first two matches and hasn't been dominating in attack themselves. They also could do some early substitutions if the game is in hand in the second half and might not have the firepower on the pitch to score a ton.

This is an important game, so if you are up in the wee hours of the night, be sure to tune in.
