NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Wednesday 2/28/24
NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.
Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Using our projections -- which are powered by numberFire -- as a guide, let's take a look at today's slate to find a goalie, some stacks, and value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.
NHL DFS Picks
Goalie to Target
Igor Shesterkin, Rangers ($8,400)
The start to this season was somewhat concerning for Igor Shesterkin ($8,400), but he might be fully back.
Shesterkin was clearly the best goalie in the NHL in 2021-22, winning the Vezina Trophy and being a finalist for the Hart Trophy for MVP. He followed that up with another great season last year, where he finished fifth in goals saved above expected (GSAx).
This year, Igor is actually second on his own team in GSAx behind a surprising season from Jonathan Quick. Shesterkin is closing the gap though after some excellent performances of late. He's won his last six games, allowing a total of just 11 goals.
Shesterkin has been particularly excellent over the last three games, allowing just one goal in each and saving 129 of 132 shots.
He should have a good chance to win tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jackets average the eighth-fewest expected goals (xG) per 60 minutes in the league.
The Rangers are -250 favorites tonight, according to the NHL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. That makes Igor very likely to get the win and is worth using $8,400 in salary on tonight.
Stacks
Edmonton Oilers
We only have four teams to potentially stack tonight, and one of them is the Edmonton Oilers, perhaps the most fun team to stack in NHL DFS.
It can be tough to stack the Oilers with the salaries of their star players. The good news is that we are finally getting Connor McDavid ($10,100) and Leon Draisaitl ($9,300) playing together at even strength. It's always easier to stack Edmonton when you have their two most dangerous players playing together.
You also get their leading goal scorer in Zach Hyman ($8,800) in this stack, who is tied for third in the league with 38 goals. These three will all play together on the power play, as well, which ranks third in the league.
Edmonton will play the St. Louis Blues at home tonight. The Blues are coming off a loss last night, so they will be on the second night of a back-to-back. They have been an up-and-down team all season, but overall, they allow the fourth-most xG per 60 minutes.
The Oilers. have the highest implied team total on the slate, which sits at 3.93 goals. We know that all three of these guys have the potential to break a slate on any night, so we want some exposure to at least two if not all three.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers lost to the Blue Jackets on Sunday, ending a 10-game winning streak. They get an immediate chance for revenge tonight.
The line we'll target is nominally the second line, but it's the most productive line on the team. Artemi Panarin ($9,500) leads the team in points and is seventh in the NHL with 1.34 points per game. Vincent Trocheck ($7,700) is second on the team with 55 points and has five goals in his last six games.
These two play on the Rangers' sixth-ranked power play. They are joined at even strength by Alexis Lafreniere ($5,400), who has five points in his last five games and at least three shots on goal in each game.
This matchup against Columbus is a great one for the Rangers. The Jackets allow the second-most goals per game in the league at 3.67 per contest.
This line won't be as popular as Edmonton's top players but has close to the same upside. The Rangers have a 3.87 implied goal total as well, and it wouldn't be shocking to see them erupt in this game.
Value Skaters
Kaapo Kakko, W, Rangers ($3,600)
A player not listed in the stack but is still a good target for the Rangers is Kaapo Kakko ($3,600).
Kakko is getting a bump up to the top line to play with Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad. This line has had great underlying numbers when played together over the past two seasons.
Playing on that line in this matchup makes Kakko an easy choice if you need value at wing.
Brandon Saad, W, Blues ($4,000)
Another value winger is Brandon Saad ($4,000). He scored in last night's game and now has four goals in his last six games.
He'll play on the second line and second power-play unit for the Blues. The Oilers haven't been as strong defensively since the All-Star break, allowing 3.67 goals per game in 12 games.
Saad is an option if you're trying to fit in those high-salaried Oilers options. He's a nice piece for lineups if this game happens to shoot out, as you'll have some exposure to both teams.
