NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Tuesday 1/30/24
NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.
Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate, find a goalie, some stacks, and some value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.
NHL DFS Picks
Goalie to Target
Jordan Binnington, Blues ($7,900)
A goalie that defines the "goalies are a little off" trope, Jordan Binnington ($7,900) has kind of put that behind him this season. He's gone from 29 penalty minutes last season -- a very high number for a goalie -- to zero penalty minutes this season.
He's been playing better this season as he's more focused on stopping the puck. He's improved to .251 goals saved above expected (GSAx) per 60 minutes after being at -.157 GSAx per 60 last season.
Binnington's St. Louis Blues will play the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at home. Columbus averages the fourth-fewest expected goals (xG) per 60 minutes. They are also going to be without Adam Fantilli for this game, as the stud rookie suffered a leg injury on Sunday.
The Blues are -170 favorites tonight, according to the NHL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. You can save $300 in salary by playing Binnington instead of the other favored goalie, Philipp Grubauer, who has been a worse netminder this campaign.
Binnington is the top goalie on the board tonight.
Stacks
Seattle Kraken
The Seattle Kraken have stormed back into playoff contention and sit two points back of a wild card spot. They'll have a great chance of getting those two points tonight.
With players coming in and out of the lineup, their line combinations look different. They've bumped up Jared McCann ($7,100) back to the first line. It makes sense since he is once again their best goal scorer, but he was seeing the seventh-most ice time per game among their forwards.
McCann is playing center now, with Jordan Eberle ($5,500) and Tomas Tatar ($4,000). It's tricky to stack these guys because they are all wings on FanDuel, but I would prioritize Eberle if you are choosing just one wing because he will play with McCann on the power play. If you need a center, I don't mind taking a chance that Matty Beniers ($5,000) gets bumped back to the top line.
Seattle will face the San Jose Sharks tonight. San Jose is actually out the very bottom spot in the NHL but is still a team we should be targeting. They are dead last in many defensive metrics, including xG against and actual goals against per 60 minutes.
Seattle should have no trouble scoring on San Jose tonight, and their players are fairly easy to get into lineups.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues occupy that final wild card spot that the Kraken are chasing, so they'll need a win tonight to stay above the playoff cut line -- at least for the time being.
St. Louis has a top line that would be a stacking option on a full slate, so when there's only two games, they become an obvious candidate for our lineups. They've put together their three most productive offensive players on the top line and the top power play, making this a clean stack.
Robert Thomas ($8,400) has been one of the best passers in the NHL over the past three seasons but is also tied for the team lead with 17 goals. The player he's tied with is Pavel Buchnevich ($7,000), who paced the team in points per game last season.
Jordan Kyrou ($8,000) is the third member of this line, and he led the team last season with 37 goals. He's not scoring as much this season, but he's a career 12.6% shooter who's down to 9.0% this season, so he should experience some positive regression.
St Louis has the highest implied team total on this slate at 3.58 goals. They'll face a Blue Jackets team that allows the second-most goals per game and the fourth-most xG per 60 minutes. The Blues' top line should be able to feast in this matchup.
Value Skaters
Jake Neighbours, W, Blues ($4,900)
If you want more exposure to the Blues, Jake Neighbours ($4,900) makes a lot of sense.
Neighbours is having a breakout season, with 15 of his 22 career goals coming this year. Those 15 goals put him third on the team. He's now playing on the top power play, as well.
With St. Louis expected to score a good amount in this game, you can add Neighbours to that stack of the first line. The power play has the potential to score multiple goals against a Columbus penalty kill that ranks as the eighth-worst in the NHL.
Fabian Zetterlund, W, Sharks ($5,100)
It's tough to roster a Sharks player, even on a two-game slate. The one who makes the most sense is probably Fabian Zetterlund ($5,100).
Zetterlund is second on the team in goals with 14, which is impressive for a young player who suits up for the lowest-scoring team in the league. He's on the top line and top power play, and he is now playing with Logan Couture, who should be able to set up Zetterlund more effectively than any other center on the team can.
Zetterlund will face Philipp Grubauer in the Kraken goal, and Grubauer has allowed .410 GSAx per 60 minutes this season. The Sharks could be able to score in this one, and Zetterlund is a low-salary way to get in on them.
