NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Thursday 2/29/24

NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.

Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.

Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.

Using our projections -- which are powered by numberFire -- as a guide, let's take a look at today's slate to find a goalie, some stacks, and value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.

NHL DFS Picks

Goalie to Target

John Gibson, Ducks ($6,800)

John Gibson ($6,800) has had a rough few seasons after being one of the best goalies in the NHL.

He's been better this campaign, posting his first positive goals saved above expected (GSAx) since the 2018-19 season. He had 48 saves in his last outing against the Los Angeles Kings, which gave him 30.4 FanDuel points without even picking up the win.

He'll have a better chance of getting the victory tonight. The Anaheim Ducks will face the San Jose Sharks. San Jose is the second-lowest scoring team in the NHL and averages the second-fewest expected goals (xG) per 60 minutes.

The Ducks are -134 favorites, according to the NHL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. It's rare that we can get a goalie for $6,800 who is a favorite, so Gibson is very appealing.

Stacks

Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche are one of the most explosive teams in the NHL. They are impossible to ignore on tonight's slate.

The Avs lead the league in goals per 60 minutes, having just blown out a good Dallas Stars team. Colorado's main players sometimes have too high of salaries to consider, but we do get some relief with one of the members of this stack.

Artturi Lehkonen ($5,300) has joined the top line and scored in each of his last two games. Playing with Nathan MacKinnon ($10,900) and Mikko Rantanen ($9,200) at both even strength and on the power play gives Lehkonen a lot of value.

MacKinnon is second in the league with 98 points while Rantanen is ninth. They'll get a chance to add to their totals today in a soft matchup.

Colorado will play the Chicago Blackhawks on the road. Chicago allows the fifth-most goals per game and the second-most high-danger chances per 60 minutes.

The Avalanche have an implied team total of just under four goals tonight, and there is every possibility that their top line dominates.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a seven game winning streak snapped on Tuesday but will look to get back on the horse tonight.

Stacking the Maple Leafs' top line gives us access to Auston Matthews ($10,600). He has six hat tricks this season and 52 goals, giving him more upside than arguably any other player in the league on a game-to-game basis. His main setup man, Mitchell Marner ($8,800), had 16 assists in his last seven games before the loss on Tuesday.

It's not easy to fit in these guys at those salaries, but you can get some value by playing Matthew Knies ($4,200), who will play on the first line with that duo.

The Leafs welcome the Arizona Coyotes to town tonight. Arizona has lost 13 games in a row, allowing 4.6 goals per game during that streak. When these two teams plays a week ago, Matthews scored twice against them, and Marner chipped in with three assists.

Toronto's implied team total is 3.85 tonight, and it's not out of the question that we see Matthews break another slate against his childhood team.

Value Skaters

Leo Carlsson, C, Ducks ($4,300)

We don't often target multiple Ducks, but we can given this matchup.

It's nice to get a chance to get in early on Leo Carlsson ($4,300). He was the second overall pick in last year's draft and has a lot of talent. He's sixth on the Ducks in points per 60 minutes.

He gets a nice role on the top line and will be on the second power play. He'll play with veterans Alex Killorn and Adam Henrique, who will be defensively responsible and allow Carlsson to focus on offense.

Against a Sharks team that allows 3.82 goals per game, Anaheim should find success. Carlsson is a low-salary way to get a piece of the Ducks.

Bowen Byram, D, Avalanche ($3,600)

We're going back to Bowen Byram ($3,600) tonight after he let us down on Tuesday.

Byram is in a better spot today, facing against the Chicago Blackhawks. He is close to the minimum salary and has lots of offensive talent, tallying seven points across his last seven games.

We don't get many players of Byram's talent level for just $3,600, especially ones on teams that are projected to score a lot like Colorado is today.
