There's just two games set for today's NHL slate, and I'm going to lean on two of the top teams in the league.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Columbus Blue Jackets at New York Rangers

Rangers -1.5 (-105)

The New York Rangers have been the hottest team in hockey, and after watching their winning streak come to an end last game, they're likely going to do everything they can to get back in the win column tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

New York is 9-1-0 in their last 10 games, with the single loss coming to this same Blue Jackets team on Sunday. Well, redemption is the call here, and it's why I believe in them being able to not only get the win but cover, as well.

The difference between these two teams is their ability to keep the puck out of the net.

The Rangers swing above expectations, as their expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) is at 3.07, but they've averaged 2.7 goals against per 60 minutes (GA/60) on the season. We have a good enough sample size after 59 games to know this New York team is good defensively. The Blue Jackets, on the other hand, have the second highest GA/60 at 3.62, which isn't a shock since with their 3.37 xGA/60 ranking as the fifth-most.

Goaltending will be vital, as well, and I like the Rangers' odds in this one. Igor Shesterkin is finally looking like himself. In his last three games, he's faced at least 40 shots in each outing and has allowed just one goal in each. Columbus doesn't have that same type of netminder as Elvis Merzlikins has struggled to a 3.29 goals against average (GAA) and .902 save percentage (SV%) on the season. He did help get the Blue Jackets the win on Sunday, but the Rangers are a talented team that should be able to figure him out this time around.

I am rolling with the Rangers to get the job done tonight. numberFire's model has the Rangers winning by a score of 4.1-2.3 and gives New York a 55.1% chance to cover the puckline.

St. Louis Blues at Edmonton Oilers

Oilers -1.5 (-102)

There have been plenty of ups and downs for the Edmonton Oilers this year, bringing them into an important game tonight against the St. Louis Blues.

As we've seen this season, the Blues are no easy matchup for anyone. However, when they lose, it's often by two-plus goals, and that's what we're banking on tonight. In their last five losses, the Blues have lost by at least two goals in each game. I like that consistency.

On the season, St. Louis has not been a good offensive team. The Blues have a 2.91 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60), ranking 24th in the NHL.

Edmonton has been the complete opposite. The Oilers lead the NHL with a 3.53 xGF/60 and have lived up to that with their elite 3.53 goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60). Considering the Oilers rank fourth with a 65.29 Corsi For per 60 minutes (CF/60), it is no a surprise that they're such a high-octane offense night in and night out.

Defensively, these two teams are a mismatch, too. The Oilers limit their opponent with a 54.22 Corsi against per 60 minutes (CA/60) while the Blues struggle to do the same, having one of the worst marks at 62.13. That poor CA/60 leads us to an even worse 3.41 xGA/60 for the Blues, which ranks 29th in the NHL. Meanwhile, Edmonton is top five at 2.87 xGA/60.

Despite these two teams being separated by only eight points in the standings, there's a sizable gap in how they are performing, and it's why I like the Oilers -1.5 tonight.
