NHL Betting Picks for Wednesday 1/31/24: Red Wings Aim to Enter Break on High Note
A three-game slate officially brings us into the break and NHL All-Star Weekend.
Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.
Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets
Ottawa Senators at Detroit Red Wings
Red Wings ML (-128)
The Detroit Red Wings are looking to close out a strong January against their division rival, the Ottawa Senators.
It's been tough to be as good as the Red Wings have been this month, and it's a big reason why we're siding with them and their moneyline tonight. While they're currently in fifth place in the Atlantic Division, Detroit is sporting a 26-18-5 record and is a win within third place. With how much the Senators have struggled this season (19-25-2), the Red Wings should be able to roll into the break with a big win.
Over their last 10 games, the Red Wings are averaging 3.29 Goals For per 60 minutes, which is good for eighth in that span. Add in that they've been able to improve on keeping the puck out of the net -- something they couldn't earlier this season -- to get an appreciation for where they are as a team. Detroit is limiting their opponents to 2.39 goals, which is the sixth-best mark in the last 10, as well.
The Senators haven't had the same luck, fitting of their season. While they're able to score goals at a high rate (3.32 Goals For per 60 minutes on the season), they're letting up the second most in the NHL at a 3.62 clip. That's all Detroit will need to succeed with how they score.
numberFire's model is all in on the Red Wings moneyline tonight, giving them a 71.89% likelihood to get the win later on.
Los Angeles Kings at Nashville Predators
Under 5.5 Goals (+112)
Usually, when a total is set at 5.5, it's easy to go with the over, but the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators have not been playing their best hockey, and that leads us to going with the under.
In each team's last 10 games, both teams are averaging under three goals. The Kings rank 28th in the NHL with a rough average of 2.36 Goals For per 60 minutes, and the Predators rank 24th with a 2.49 rate.
The difficulties in scoring have led to poor records. Nashville is 4-5-1 in their last 10, and the Kings are that much worse, recording only two wins in that same span.
Just two weeks ago, the Predators and Kings matched up in a game that ended in a final score of 2-1. Considering neither team has been much better since then, it's easy to believe that we will get a similar result on tonight's slate.
Cam Talbot will be between the pipes for the Kings, and the Predators will send out Juuse Saros.
The Kings' goaltender has been impressive for the majority of the campaign. He's got a 2.59 goals against average, .911 save percentage, and has saved 7.69 goals above expectation.
On the other hand, the Predators' netminder has played under expectations with a 2.94 goals against average and .903 save percentage. Even with those problems, Saros still remains one of the top goalies and can certainly have one of his best games against this Kings team.
With each team being mostly equal these last few weeks, taking Under 5.5 Goals looks to be the best option.
