NBA Betting: When Will LeBron James Notch His 40,000th Point?
The number of achievements and records that LeBron James has accrued throughout his legendary career are countless. The 20-time All-Star is in the midst of his 21st season in the NBA, and he is nearing another impressive benchmark: 40,000 regular-season points.
No other player in the history of the NBA has surpassed 39,000 points, let alone 40,000. Coming off a 34-point outing where he dropped 19 points in the fourth quarter to help the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, James is just 40 points away from reaching the desired number of 40,000.
With everyone watching in awe of what James is doing in his age-39 campaign, FanDuel Sportsbook-- via their NBA odds -- is offering multiple NBA Specials centered around James' impending feat. Not only can you wager on which game LeBron will reach 40,000 points, but you can also bet on how (method of basket) he scores the necessary points to achieve the record.
Considering that the Lakers are scheduled to take on the Washington Wizards tonight (Thursday), let's take a look at when and how James could reach the 40,000-point milestone.
LeBron James 40,000th-Point Betting
In Which Game Will LeBron James Score His 40,000th Point?
Which Game Will LeBron James Score his 40,000th Regular Season Point? | Odds |
---|---|
February 29 vs. Washington Wizards | +1900 |
March 2 vs. Denver Nuggets | -125 |
March 4 vs. Oklahoma City Thunder | -110 |
March 6 vs. Sacramento Kings | +3100 |
Predicting which games James will score his 40,000th regular-season point is a bit easier now that he's only 40 points shy of the accomplishment. The only four games available in the market are the Lakers' upcoming matchups versus the Wizards, Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Sacramento Kings.
In his 21st season in the league, James is averaging a solid 25.2 points per game in 52 appearances, which is the most points per game for a player that is 39 years or older. By simply using his season averages, it is easy to see why the impending Nuggets game -- which is two games away -- has the shortest odds (-125) to be the contest where LBJ hits 40,000.
However, the Lakers are on the second leg of a back-to-back on Thursday, and James has been dealing with a nagging ankle ailment. On top of that, the Lakers are 9.5-point home favorites over the Wizards in that one, which increases the chances that the Lakers could elect to sit their veteran forward.
Dating back to December, James has sat on the first or second leg of the back-to-back for Los Angeles in three of the last six back-to-backs the team has endured. This isn't to say that James will definitely be ruled out, but there is a chance he isn't in uniform when the Lakers take on the Wizards.
Even if James suits up on Thursday against the Wizards, he has managed to post 40-plus points in a game just once all season. In the event that James is inactive for the Washington game, then the March 4th clash with the Thunder at home becomes the favored game for when he'll surpass 40,000 points.
The last option for which game "King James" will score his 40,000th point is the March 6 home bout versus the Kings. Scoring his 40,000th point against Sacramento would be a full-circle moment as James played his very first game -- and scored his first point -- in the NBA against the Kings.
Method of LeBron James' Basket to Score His 40,000th Point
Method of LeBron James' Basket to Score his 40,000th Regular Season Point | Odds |
---|---|
Layup | +175 |
Three-Point Field Goal | +300 |
Other | +320 |
Free Throw | +500 |
Dunk | +550 |
Besides having a chance to bet on the specific game where James will register the necessary points to reach 40,000 in his regular-season career, we can also wager on how he does it. The favored option of the bunch is "Layup" (+175), as it requires James simply using his strength to get to the basket to reach the milestone.
When looking at the numbers, 32.8% of James' field-goal attempts come in the zero-to-three-foot range, which is the necessary distance to count as a layup. Some of those shots are dunks, but the 39-year-old superstar still spends a decent amount of time attacking the rim.
The second-shortest option by the odds is "Three Point Field Goal" at +300 odds. James is attempting 5.5 threes per game and he is converting a career-best 40.8 of his shots beyond the arc.
Making a deep shot would certainly add some flair to achieving the record. It would also be a testament to just how well James has evolved his game with today's league centered around making three-pointers at a high clip.
Following "Three Point Field Goal" in the method of basket section is "Other," which is carrying +320 odds. Within this market, "Other" is any basket that isn't a layup, three-point shot, free throw, or dunk.
One of my favorite choices in the market is the "Free Throw" option, which has the fourth-shortest odds (+500). The four-time MVP attempts 5.3 free throws per game, and the Lakers will be playing at home in their next six games.
Getting his final point at the free-throw line would make for a theatric ending to the long-anticipated wait, allowing the crowd to fully get involved in the achievement. The volume of the arena would be through the roof as James dribbles the ball before shooting the ball toward the basket.
Last but not least, we have the option to choose "Dunk" (+550) as the way he reaches 40,000 points. Throughout his illustrious career, James has dunked the ball with ferocity, and the idea of him postering a defender to surpass the milestone would be *chef's kiss*.
After beating the Clippers on Wednesday, James has made 61 dunks -- or 1.17 dunks per game -- this season. Besides dunking over a defender, it would be exciting to see James deliver a windmill or reverse slam to hit the 40,000-point mark.
