NBA Prop Picks
Kawhi Leonard Over 6.5 Rebounds (-130)
We'll get a cross-town showdown tonight with the Los Angeles Lakers taking on the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers will be without Paul George (knee) this evening, which will undoubtedly have an impact on how the box score shakes out.
With George's absence in mind, there are a few Clipper props worth checking out, but I'm finding the most value in Kawhi Leonard's rebounding prop.
Leonard is averaging 6.2 rebounds and 9.6 rebound chances per game. George, on the other hand, is recording 5.3 rebounds and 8.7 rebound chances each night.
While George is not the preeminent rebounder on this Clippers team, there is a rebounding gap to be filled when he's out. History shows that Leonard has filled that gap with ease.
In four games sans George this season, Leonard is averaging 8.8 rebounds. He grabbed 8, 10, 9, and 8 boards in those games.
Dating back to last season, Leonard has exceeded 6.5 rebounds in 13 of his last 17 games without George, including his last eight straight contests in this split.
The Lakers pose as a decent matchup, too. On the season, LAL is surrendering the seventh-most rebounds per game to small forwards. Over their last 15 games, they've given up the third-most rebounds in this split.
It makes sense that the Lakers are particularly sacrificial on the boards when it comes to small forwards. LAL shoots the ball at the league's fourth-best clip from the less than 5-foot range, while they struggle with the third-worst shooting percentage from 20-24 feet.
This increases the rebound chances for defenders, namely Leonard, who don't always occupy the paint and could be why Leonard is averaging 8.3 rebounds (6, 8, and 11 rebounds) in three games against the Lakers this season.
Tyrese Haliburton Over 18.5 Points (-122)
Tyrese Haliburton is averaging 21.5 points per game this season, so the market may be setting his points prop too low for Wednesday.
For context, Haliburton is scoring over 18.5 points on a very consistent basis.
In late January, a hamstring injury forced Hali to exit a game early, and his return to play was met with an injury management minutes restriction.
If we exclude the seven contests wherein Haliburton was limited (averaged 22.0 minutes in this span; averages 32.0 minutes on the season), he has exceeded 18.5 points in 29 out of his 39 games (74.4% of contests).
The Indiana Pacers will take on a solid New Orleans Pelicans team, but some cracks in this matchup give credence to a decent scoring performance from Haliburton.
The Pelicans are surrendering the fifth-most three-point makes (3PM) to point guards. Haliburton nets 43.0% of his points from downtown and is shooting the three-ball at an above-average 39.3% clip.
Despite the fact that the Pelicans come in with the league's sixth-best defensive rating, the Pacers are still in line for a 122.5 implied team total, tied for the highest projected total on today's slate.
LeBron James Over 1.5 Made Threes (-132)
Let's revisit the Lakers-Clippers showdown and look for LeBron James to shine in this nationally televised (ESPN) game.
LeBron is averaging 2.1 3PM. He has made over 1.5 threes in 36 of his 51 games this season.
This means that LeBron is exceeding 1.5 3PM at a 70.6% rate, while the -132 odds suggest just a 56.9% probability.
The value of this prop is awesome and becomes even more realized in looking at this matchup.
The Clippers cede the seventh-most 3PM to small forwards. They've struggled even more as of late, allowing small forwards to drain the second-most three-pointers in the Association over their last 30 games.
This game environment is quite intriguing, too. A sizable 234.0 over/under and close 3.5-point spread which favors the Clippers means we could have a very competitive game on tap. When the competition calls for it, LeBron tends to show up under the spotlight, so I like where we could find him tonight.
He's nailed more than 1.5 threes in 13 of his last 14 games, so I'm comfortable siding with LeBron tonight.
