3 MLB Trades We'd Love to See Before the Trade Deadline
The MLB trade deadline is right around the corner, and teams looking to bolster their rosters for a playoff push -- or to offload aging talent in preparation for future seasons -- will have to do so before next Tuesday's August 1st deadline.
The 2023 season brought with it many new surprises, and several teams that spent the past few seasons on the outside looking in come playoff time now find themselves in competitive positions.
Which teams could make a move as they prepare for the 2023 playoffs?
The Reds Should Trade for Detroit's Eduardo Rodriguez
Who would have thought back in May that the Cincinnati Reds would find themselves firmly in the playoff hunt at this point of the season?
Before their Wild Card round loss after the shortened 2020 season, the team hadn't made the playoffs since 2013. Now, they find themselves in contention for the first seed out of the NL Central and just 1.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.
There were rumors about the team trading away infielder Jonathan India at the start of the season, and the team is reportedly still open to moving on from the third-year pro as their young talent matriculates into the league. India is in the final year of his deal and is still just 26 years old.
The Detroit Tigers aren't making a playoff push this year, and have a valuable starter likely entering the final year of his contract -- Eduardo Rodriguez.
Rodriguez's career-best 2.95 ERA and .598 OPS allowed so far this season have outmatched most of the Reds' current pitching depth, and his 33.9% hard-hit rate (11th-best) and 7.1% weak-hit rate (4th-best) would help the team mitigate the negative aspects of playing at the Great American Ballpark.
The Tigers' infield is still a work in progress, but getting first access to signing India to a long-term deal could help address that issue.
The Brewers Should Target Jorge Soler
The Milwaukee Brewers need some run support -- and badly.
It's borderline miraculous that they are still leading the NL Central in spite of the fact they rank fifth-worst in all of Major League Baseball in runs per game (4.11).
Their stellar pitching staff and elite closer have helped keep their poor offense afloat this long, but the team will need to put some runs on the board if they have any hopes of making an impact in the playoffs this year.
Enter Miami Marlins outfielder Jorge Soler, who may or may not want to exercise his player option with his current team for the 2024 season. We're not likely to see the veteran replicate his absurd 48-homer 2019 season any time soon, but he brings power to the plate that the Brewers are sorely lacking.
Beyond Christian Yelich, who has had an impressive resurgence this season, and catcher William Contreras, the Brewers don't have a single batter with an OPS better than .700.
Soler's .823 OPS would rank second on the Brewers today, and according to MLB Statcast Data, his .369 expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA) ranks 22nd among all batters this season.
The Marlins have needed his power over the course of the season themselves, but with their current third-place standing in the NL East, they'd need a lot more help to make a playoff push.
The Diamondbacks Need Josh Hader
Just one year after joining the San Diego Padres at the 2022 trade deadline, rumors have already begun circulating about the possibility of the team trading star closer Josh Hader.
The Padres' season didn't go to plan; their 49-54 record ranks fourth in the NL West. But needy teams could be clamoring for the star, whose current 0.95 ERA is on pace to be the best of his career as he prepares for unrestricted free agency this offseason.
Hader's end to the 2022 season was an unfortunate one, but the star has regained his confidence this year. He has allowed hard hits on just 5% of swings this year, the lowest rate in the entire league, while allowing opposing batters to barrel balls in only 2,0% of their plate appearances (17th-best). With just four blown saves, he would be worth his weight in gold to a team with playoff aspirations and in need of a closer -- like the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks have blown past all of their preseason expectations this year, but they need help in their bullpen if they want to make the playoffs.
At 55-48 they're four games back from the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers , and their inability to close games has absolutely damaged their chances of taking first. They've converted just 59% of their save opportunities this season, tying them with the Washington Nationals as the 9th-worst team in the league at converting saves.
Haders' strong 86% rate would go a long way to helping them make the playoffs this year.
