3 MLB Teams That Should Be Looking To Buy at the Trade Deadline
The MLB Trade Deadline is coming up on Aug. 1st and it's time to see what teams are ready to make a splash in their playoff pursuit.
As every year goes, there will be teams who make some big trades at the deadline and there will be those who add small pieces for the push. With the addition of the third Wild Card spot in each league, it's made a lot of teams more likely to buy than sell at the deadline, creating the conversation of who is willing to shell out the most for the players of necessity.
We're going to take a look at three teams who should be looking to buy at the Trade Deadline no matter what as they have a chance to make a splash -- whether it's as a new team approaching the playoffs or a team who has been here before.
Baltimore Orioles
Record: 62-40
Standing: 1st in AL East
It's all coming together for the Baltimore Orioles.
A season ago with the MLB Trade Deadline approaching, the Orioles had a shot at the playoffs but played it easy and still sold rather than tried to make the push. That seems to have been the right choice. This year things have changed. Not only do the Orioles have one of the best bullpens led by Felix Bautista and Yennier Cano but they have had the overall pitching and hitting to drive them to the top of the AL East over the early-season record-setting Tampa Bay Rays.
Offensively, the Orioles have been nothing but solid. Baltimore is 13th in the majors with a .320 wOBA and 11th at a 104 wRC+ while putting together a respectable 120 home runs -- showing they have the power. And on the pitching side of things, they're top 10 with a 4.04 SIERA and 4.09 FIP.
Adding to the offense and finding someone to help the rotation will be moves the Orioles should consider. Starters like James Paxton and Paul Blackburn jump off the page as pitchers the Orioles could go get without moving a big package like the likes of Max Scherzer will demand.
Time for the O's to make a splash.
Cincinnati Reds
Record: 56-48
Standing: 2nd in NL Central (1.5 GB); 3rd in NL Wild Card
The Cincinnati Reds have surged into the season-ending stretch as one of the most exciting teams in baseball. But they're going to need help.
Led by rookie sensation Elly De La Cruz, the Reds' offense has powered them to a playoff spot and into contention for the NL Central crown. Over their last 50 games, the Reds are 31-19 -- including a 12-game winning streak -- and now sitting just 1.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers. The offense ranks 10th with a .325 wOBA, storming in the second half as they rank 8th since June 1st.
The reason they will need to be buyers comes down to pitching more than anything. Cincinnati has the fifth-worst SIERA (4.50), which is the highest among teams over .500. Their list of prospects that gave them one of the best farm systems in baseball coming into the year has given the Reds hope but that hope will be just that without some pitching help.
It'll come down to them wanting to stay in-house and seeing how other prospects turn out or making the moves to get better right now, but there's no doubt that if they want to be, the Reds can be among the top buyers at the deadline and acquire some players who will help them now and later. And they should be with the division in sight.
Tampa Bay Rays
Record: 62-43
Standing: 2nd in AL East (1.5 GB); 1st in AL Wild Card
Are the Tampa Bay Rays still one of the best teams in baseball? Yes. Did they set records to kick off the year? Yes. Do they still need help? Absolutely.
Out of the three teams listed on this list, the Rays rank higher than all in every category but they've still managed to find themselves 2nd in the AL East as of this writing. The Rays are 6th in wOBA at .333 while they sit 3rd in wRC+ at 118.
Things keep clicking from there as Tampa Bay is 4th in home runs with 150. Their +141 run differential is the second-best in the league, only trailing the Texas Rangers.
The pitching jumps off the page with a 3.90 SIERA (5th best) and their 24.5% strikeout rate (7th). But where they do struggle besides their injury woes throughout the season is in the bullpen. Tampa Bay is 24th with a 4.15 SIERA from their bullpen, showing how much they've leaned on their gifted rotation to get them here.
Relievers like Jordan Hicks and Kyle Finnegan could be on the Rays list and should be. Tampa Bay has reached this point time and time again where they're top contenders heading into the offseason but haven't been able to make it back to the World Series since their loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, let alone win one.
It's time to go big or go home for the Rays. No more waiting around.
