(3) Oregon State vs. (1) South Carolina
Oregon State +15.5 (-112)
The Oregon State Beavers pulled off a 3-over-2 upset against Notre Dame on Friday.
Raegan Beers hauled in 13 rebounds and scored 18 points, but she wasn't the only one with a double-double. Timea Gardiner went for 21 points and 11 rebounds against Notre Dame.
A huge reason for their win was that rebounding prowess. They won the rebounding battle 42 to 24 over Notre Dame.
But turnovers might be the key to their game against unbeaten South Carolina for various reasons.
Despite a great rebounding game in the Sweet 16, Oregon State amassed a 31.3% turnover rate for 24 total turnovers. (For context, South Carolina State had a country-worst 28.3% turnover rate this season on offense.)
On the year, Oregon State's turnover rate was 17.6% to rank them just outside the top 100 offensively. So it was an uncharacteristically sloppy game from the Beavers.
They don't give it away at a super high rate, and South Carolina's defense -- for as great as it is -- has generated just an 18.5% turnover rate defensively.
Yet on the other side of the game, they may need need to disrupt South Carolina more than usual.
Oregon State's 11.5% turnover rate generated is a nation low defensively, and South Carolina won't be in a hurry to beat themselves (they're 14th in turnover rate offensively).
There is a path for Oregon State keeping it close, however.
That's slowing the pace (they're 290th in tempo) and shooting threes (they're 67th in three-point attempt rate and 29th in three-point field goal percentage).
In a rather robust sample of eight games against teams in the top-10 in Sports-Reference's adjusted net ratings, Oregon State is 2-6 -- but with an average point margin of -7.2 in the losses.
Only one of those losses was by double-digits (11 points to UCLA). That means they've been able to keep things close against a pretty large sample of great teams. Part of that is because the pace in those matchups is only 67.1 -- down from 69.8 in all of their other games.
On the other hand, South Carolina has played eight top-20 teams (Oregon State is 17th in adjusted net rating). Of course, they've won them all, but have done so by an average of 12.7 points. Only three of the eight were by at least 16 points.
South Carolina could be looking to make a statement after Indiana surged back, but a lot points to Oregon State being able to hang -- somewhat -- with the Gamecocks if they can take care of the ball and slow down the game.
(3) NC State vs. (1) Texas
Under 136.5 (-110)
Both teams in this matchup netted double-digit Sweet 16 wins.
Despite trailing by 10 at halftime, NC State knocked off Stanford and likely second-overall WNBA Draft pick Cameron Brink, who fouled out in only 23 minutes of action.
Aziaha James, a 5'9" junior, torched Stanford with 29 points on 14 shots while going 10 of 11 from the stripe. Saniya Rivers (13) and Zoe Brooks (12) also chipped in double-digit points with Madison Hayes hauling in a team-high 10 rebounds.
NC State had half as many turnovers (7) as they forced, which helped them cut down the impact of losing the rebounding battle 35 to 42.
Texas, meanwhile, cruised to a 69-47 win over Gonzaga in a standout defensive showing on paper. However, they did let up 22 three-point attempts, yet Gonzaga made only 4.
We shouldn't see a lot of threes in this game from either side, as both are outside the top 200 in three-point attempt rate. NC State is 233rd with Texas 360th (yes, last) in the nation.
An interesting angle here is the free-throw disparity. Texas ranks 27th in the nation in free-throw rate, but NC State hasn't given up a lot of freebies (3rd, defensively, in free-throw rate).
Given the rarity of three-pointers and the possibility of limited free-throw attempts, the under is appealing in this spot.
